Elementary school guidance counselor roles and responsibilities
- Fosters the educational, career and social/emotional development of students throughout elementary school.
- Counsels students who have academic or other difficulties;
- Interviews students new to the school, provides orientation and information relative to school procedures, curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities upon student(s) enrollment;
- Discusses any issues the student(s) may be experiencing;
- Assists and encourages involvement in various activities in the school community;
- Follows the adjustment of newly enrolled students, i.e. communicating with teachers and parents.
- Teaches students various coping strategies, skills, and methods to handle various challenges.
- Assists students in conflict resolution;
- Observes students and identifies their strengths, problems or areas for improvement;
- Monitors the progress of children with difficulties to observe if improvement is being made.
- Works closely with school administration and parents to assess the needs and abilities of students.
- Works with students, parents, and staff members to help students receive the support needed to be successful.
- Offers guidance to students and teachers.
- Works with other teachers to help with the overall development of the students, not just their academic development.
- Has one-on-one parent conferencing, when necessary.
- Organizes educational presentations for students (e.g. bullying prevention, etc.).
