1 Break duty – ASM Teachers

Break duty

American School Macedonia teachers also have a responsibility to supervise the elementary and high school students during the school breaks to ensure their safety. School administration provides a schedule to teachers at the beginning of the academic year. Teachers’ responsibilities are as follows:

  • Report to duty on time. Punctuality ensures consistent and safe supervision.

  • Be vigilant while supervising students. Never leave them unattended.

  • Circulate actively through your duty area. Pay particular attention to areas and activities that pose an increased risk of injury.

  • It is your responsibility to supervise students in the assigned area. Supervision must be constant and focused.

  • Before leaving your duty area, ensure another staff member has arrived to replace you.

  • If you are aware that a particular student tends to act dangerously or unpredictably, increase your supervision of that student.

  • Address conflicts immediately and calmly. If a situation escalates or you’re unsure how to handle it, inform the office or another staff member.

  • Ensure students stay within designated break areas. If a student needs to go elsewhere (e.g., to the toilet or the office), be aware of where they are and ensure they return.

  • In case of an accident or injury, even if minor, report it to the office immediately. Do not ignore it or assume someone else has reported it.

  • Organize the breaks: students should first have their snacks/meals and only then be allowed to play.

  • Students are not allowed to take any balls from the Teachers’ Room. If you see a student with a ball that was not given by the teachers on duty, take it away and explain the rule.

  • When speaking with other teachers or students, remember your primary duty is supervision. Stay aware of what all the students under your care are doing.

  • Monitor for signs of bullying or exclusion and intervene appropriately.

  • Engage with students when possible (e.g., check in with those who are alone or withdrawn) to foster a positive and safe environment.

  • Be mindful of your language. Profanity or abusive language must never be used. If a student uses inappropriate language, correct them and apply appropriate disciplinary measures, which may include reporting to the office.

  • Maintain your professionalism. You are a teacher, not a friend. Interact with students respectfully, with authority, and as a role model.
