High school guidance counselor roles and responsibilities
- Organizes and administers the counseling and guidance program to direct counseling activities, i.e. disseminates information to students and parents via school (e.g. information on career fairs, etc.)
- Provides individual/group counseling for students in the areas of academic, personal/social and career development during the school year.
- Counsels students who have academic or other difficulties;
- Provides orientation and appropriate information to student(s) upon enrollment;
- Discusses any problems the student(s) may be experiencing;
- Assists and encourages involvement in various activities in the school community;
- Follows the adjustment of newly enrolled students, i.e. communicating with teachers and parents.
- Assists students with career development:
- Organizes visitation from college/business representatives in-country or student visits to colleges/businesses;
- Assists with student registration;
- Assists students with the college application process (transcripts, essays, letters of recommendation, extracurricular records, accomplishments, etc.);
- Informs students about the advantages of higher level courses (AP);
- Informs students about standardized testing (SAT, FCE, CAE, CPE, IELTS);
- Works collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and other staff regarding issues such as student attitude, progress and attendance.
- Communicates regularly with parents, seeking their support and advice, so as to create a cooperative relationship to support the student in the school.
- Organizes interviews and counseling sessions with students in order to design a job shadow program/schedule for grade 12 students that outlines individual / group visits to businesses and organizations.
