Elementary school guidance counselor roles and responsibilities

  • Fosters the educational, career and social/emotional development of students throughout elementary school.
  • Counsels students who have academic or other difficulties;
  • Interviews students new to the school, provides orientation and information relative to school procedures, curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities upon student(s) enrollment;
  • Discusses any issues the student(s) may be experiencing;
  • Assists and encourages involvement in various activities in the school community;
  • Follows the adjustment of newly enrolled students, i.e. communicating with teachers and parents.
  • Teaches students various coping strategies, skills, and methods to handle various challenges.
  • Assists students in conflict resolution;
  • Observes students and identifies their strengths, problems or areas for improvement;
  • Monitors the progress of children with difficulties to observe if improvement is being made.
  • Works closely with school administration and parents to assess the needs and abilities of students.
  • Works with students, parents, and staff members to help students receive the support needed to be successful.
  • Offers guidance to students and teachers.
  • Works with other teachers to help with the overall development of the students, not just their academic development.
  • Has one-on-one parent conferencing, when necessary.
  • Organizes educational presentations for students (e.g. bullying prevention, etc.).
