MAP committee - overview

The fundamental responsibility of the MAP Committee is to inform the school administration and School Improvement Committee about trends derived from data taken from the school’s MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing sessions. Students in grades 1 through 11 take two tests: English (Reading) and Math twice a year (Sept/Oct and May).

The MAP Committee was formed at the start of the 2015/16 academic year in response from a desire from teaching staff to have a formal body that would look at and study MAP data.

Due to the pandemic, however, ASM discontinued the MAP assessments in 2020 due to the tests being held remotely. MAP testing was reactivated for the  academic year 2023/24.

Objectives

  • To create a strong, effective School MAP Committee from the faculty that will use data from the MAP testing sessions to generate ideas for how the school can best be improved.
  • To use data to guide the school’s School Improvement Planning and to improve school climate, including creating more caring, inclusive social norms, and focusing on student specific and grade specific areas for improvement (MAP Skills), by using aggregated and disaggregated MAP data.
  • To focus on improving the education that ASM offers its students by providing practical ways for MAP data to be analyzed and then disseminated throughout the school. This information is then used to inform instruction and guide tuition.

The MAP committee meets formally only twice a year, but this belies the impact and work the MAP Committee does, not to mention the numerous informal meetings that MAP Committee members have with all staff. The MAP Committee meets after the main MAP testing sessions (fall and spring) and studies the data from the results and then works to provide a brief narrative of what can be seen to be happening across the school (using data/trends).

A permanent member of the MAP Committee is the school’s IT Head, members of the Curriculum Mapping Committee, and we ask that teachers volunteer to join the MAP Committee on a yearly basis.
